Food for Thought: One Silsal Coffee Cup, Five Ways

Surely there’s only one way to use a coffee cup, we hear you whispering. Well, at Silsal we definitely disagree. We love to repurpose, reinvent and reimagine uses for all of our ‘everyday’ items – coffee cups being one of the most versatile!

Over the years, we all collect gorgeous sets of coffee cups we just adore, whether they’re vibrant and colourful, or crafted from sleek glass. So, instead of hiding them away in your cupboard, dust them off, bring them out and use them, every day.

Pretty Plants

Arabic coffee cups make the perfect mini-plant pot. Add a touch of soil, a small succulent and voila, a gorgeous leaving gift for dinner guests, which doubles as decoration during the party.

Clever Candlelight
2
Fill your coffee cups with tealight candles and scatter them on tables and windowsills to create an intimate glow. It’s a sweet, unexpected touch that will have guests praising your creative genius!

Sweet storage

Coffee cups double as a chic storage solution. Use them for small dessert spoons, toothpicks or even some salt and pepper!

Innovative Vases
2
Add a touch of interest to your floral decoration by using coffee cups as a creative vase solution. Display one medium or large sized bloom in the cup or, for smaller flowers such as baby’s breath or rose, you can create bijou bunches!

Foodie Favourite
2
Perhaps our favorite use for our coffee cups (besides to sip a steaming hot cup o’ Joe) is to utilise them as innovative serving solutions! Fill them a dollop of dip and crudités, or chocolate mousse and homemade pretzels, for cute, single servings guests can carry around.

“With the festive season approaching, it is all about gatherings with family and friends and fabulous tables filled with colourful food to share and enjoy! I love mixing big, huge serving plates with small, individual portions, as it makes the table visually richer and the menu easier to prepare, especially for larger numbers.

“Silsal’s coffee cups have always been one of my favorite options for serving or displaying individual portions. Whether it’s a bite-sized salad, a chunk of creamy cheese sprinkled with nuts and chutney, or even a cute dessert, you can prepare them in advance and display them, so guests can graze at their leisure. Everybody always loves picking up a pretty little cup and enjoying whatever delicious surprise it has to offer!“

Recipe: @petite_choses Coconut Tapioca Pudding with Mango Coulis
Makes 8 small Arabic cups of pudding

  • 60 g small pearl tapioca
  • 600 ml coconut milk + 50 ml whipping cream (or coconut cream if vegan)
  • 60 g caster sugar
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract (or seeds from 1 pod)
  • For the topping

  • 1 fresh mango, cubed and blended until smooth
  • Directions

    1. Combine tapioca and coconut milk plus cream in a medium pot, and let soak for 30 minutes.
    2. Add sugar and salt to the tapioca mixture and heat over medium heat until it reaches a simmer. Reduce heat and keep cooking on low until the tapioca pearls are transparent and the pudding has thickened.
    3. Keep stirring with a rubber spatula, or a metal spoon, to avoid the tapioca getting stuck at the bottom of the pan.
    4. Once done, take off the heat and add vanilla.
    5. Pour into small Arabic coffee cups and chill in fridge until completely cool.
    6. Add mango coulis and cover with cling film until ready to serve.
