Each month, Silsal’s Spotlight series highlights chefs, stylists and artists who have inspired and delighted us. Today we are featuring Yasmine Idriss from Petites Choses, who is a food stylist, mother and food blogger.
“For Dubai Design Week I created a fabulous dessert table, which centered around two statement cakes. My aim was to use the Silsal tableware products, but outside of their original contexts, while also creating a display with wow-factor.
I always love using design elements when creating desserts and styling tables, whether it is contrast, repetition or symmetry. For this particular project, I really focused on creating and emphasising contrast.
For example, to juxtapose Silsal’s geometric cake stand, I designed a very tall, light pink cake, which I decorated with delicate meringues and macaroons. The contrast of the modern, sleek stand against the elaborate, romantic cake added an innovative edge, and highlighted the personality of each element. It allowed them to shine individually, while still working together in cohesive harmony.
I finished the look by gently dusting the cake with edible gold powder, which is available at most cake decorating shops. This little trick can transform any ‘regular’ cookie or meringue into something lavish – almost royal, even.
The second cake was a simple, all-white, three-tiered cake. It was clean and modern, and so to create contrast, I placed it on a very rustic, wooden stool top. Adding another dimension, I adorned the cake with a geometric, black Ashkaal candleholder, which I filled with white hydrangeas and a small white elephant. It may sound a little over-the-top, but by keeping most of the elements white, it really allowed me to play with contrasts without compromising the aesthetic. “
